Themed Party Using Board Games For Families
Do you ever feel like you are too old to have a party? Especially a themed party where you dress up? Well for my husband's birthday this year I decided to throw caution to the wind and have a full-fledged, themed birthday party with 3 other couples invited to come and participate. Since we are all hard core gamers I decided to base the party theme around one of the board games I was planning to play for the evening. Luckily we have a stockpile of great board games for families around the house so it was easy for me to pick something fun to play. The chosen game is called Bang and it has a wild west theme so we did cowboys and indians as you can tell from the picture of my kids ;)
Our birthday party started with a "no-kid" policy. While we do have a lot of children's board games that are also fun for adults, this night was meant for the grown-ups. I had the table set out with a wild west tablecloth and we had homemade crockpot chili and cornbread. Delicious! After dinner we quickly cleared off the table and got a game of Bang going. Bang is a fairly simple to explain game, however there are a lot of different cards that you use to perform different actions so it usually takes one round of play before you real feel comfortable with knowing what you are doing. The main purpose of Bang is to either kill the sheriff or keep the sheriff from being killed, depending on your assigned role. There are some sneaky aspects to the game if you choose to not be transparent about which character you are. You can also make a big difference in the game by choosing your character role well. My husband (the birthday boy) actually ended up being the sheriff for both games that we played. He lost once and won once so overall it turned out to be a successful game night.
Once we had our fill of Bang I broke out a homemade ice cream cake complete with cowboy decorations and we pigged out. I lovingly forced my husband to wear his indian headdress the entire night but I also wore my cowboy hat to make him feel better. A few of our friends dressed up to fit the theme as well which just makes for a really fun evening over all. I really went all out with the decor because I just felt like having a fun party. I think in the future I might opt for a kid-friendly night and do another themed party with some board games for families with younger children.
